On September 19, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Speaker of the Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan of India in New Delhi.

Xi Jinping pointed out that Speaker Mahajan is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Early this century when the BJP was the ruling party of the Indian government, China-India relations achieved comprehensive and rapid development. China and India, as the two largest developing countries and emerging-market countries in the world today, share identical development goals, similar development philosophies and compatible development strategies. The two countries can complement each other's advantages and boost cooperation to build a closer development partnership. China and India enjoy long-standing and deep cultural connections. During my visit, both sides made the China-India cultural exchanges plan. We should vigorously promote bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges and deepen the traditional friendship between the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that the National People’s Congress (NPC) of China and the Lok Sabha of India as well as the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the BJP maintain friendly and cooperative relations. It is hoped that both sides could continue to strengthen exchanges and promote bilateral mutual trust, cooperation and friendship.

Mahajan welcomed Xi Jinping’s visit on behalf of the Lok Sabha, expressing that Indian people and Chinese people enjoy a long history of close and friendly exchanges, and that Indian people appreciate China's development achievements. It is hoped that the two countries strengthen cooperation, inherit friendship and join hands to develop. The Lok Sabha and Indian parliamentarians stand ready to increase exchanges, share the experience of governance and administration of state affairs and boost the development of bilateral relations with the Chinese side.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu and Yang Jiechi attended the meeting.
