On March 21–22, 2026, Chinese Embassy in India, together with the Wushu Association of India, jointly hosted the International Taijiquan Day celebration and competition in Chennai. Mr. Wang Xinming, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, attended the opening ceremony and delivered remarks. Representatives from the Wushu Association of India, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, and the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association, among other Indian institutions, were also present.

In his remarks, Mr. Wang expressed appreciation and recognition for the Wushu Association of India’s long-standing efforts in promoting Chinese wushu in India. He noted that Taijiquan is an important part of China’s fine traditional culture, embodying traditional philosophies such as the harmony between humanity and nature and the balance between strength and softness. It carries both health benefits and rich cultural value. In recent years, Taijiquan activities have attracted a growing number of Indian participants, becoming an important bridge for enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of China and India. He also highlighted that UNESCO designated March 21 as the “International Taijiquan Day” last year, which fully reflects the high recognition of Taijiquan’s value by the international community and provides an important platform for exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

More than 200 wushu practitioners from across India gathered at Kovalam Blue Flag Beach to compete in events including Taijiquan, Taiji sword, Taiji fan, and partner routines. Set against the natural backdrop of the sea and sky, the fluid and graceful movements of the participants created a harmonious and visually striking scene. The innovative “beach + Taijiquan” format expanded the traditional space and modes of presentation for wushu, significantly enhancing both its appeal and participation. The event generated enthusiastic responses among local communities, especially young people.
