On 8 May 2021, Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in India Counsellor Wang Xiaojian made a solemn statement upon the wrongdoings of certain Indian media on the Taiwan question, refuting false arguments and reiterating China’s principle and position. The full text is as follows:

Recently, certain Indian media published an article by Shih-Chung Chen, head of the Taiwan authorities' health and welfare department, openly advocating "Taiwan independence" and "Taiwan's participation in WHO". The Chinese side hereby expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities has been stubbornly adhering to the "Taiwan independence" separatist stance, constantly challenging the One-China principle. Recently, DPP authorities have been busy to make political manipulation by “sharing anti-epidemic model”,attempting to hype up so-called “Taiwan's participation in the WHA”. The real intention is to seek "Taiwan independence" and expand “international space” under the pretext of the pandemic with the help of some Western countries. Such attempt is doomed to fail.

As is known to all, there is but one China in the world and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. One-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm governing international relations. All countries that have diplomatic relations with China should firmly honour their commitment to One-China principle, which is also Indian Government’s official standing.

China's position is consistent and clear: participation of China's Taiwan region in activities of international organizations, including the WHO, which consists of sovereign nations, must be handled in accordance with the One-China principle. This is an important principle established by UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1.

The Chinese Central Government attaches great importance to the health and well-being of our compatriots in the Taiwan region. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we’ve been updating the Taiwan region in a timely manner of the latest information. We've made appropriate arrangements for Taiwan's participation in global health affairs. There is an International Health Regulations Contact Point in the Taiwan region and it has unimpeded information exchange with the WHO and other countries through well-established mechanisms.

The Taiwan question concerns China's core interests, and is the red line that cannot be challenged. We firmly oppose any separatist activities to create the so-called "Taiwan independence", "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan". We urge relevant Indian media to take a correct stance on issues of core interests concerning China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, adhere to the One-China principle, not to provide platform for "Taiwan independence" forces, neither to send wrong messages to the public.
