Remarks by Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in India on Recent Situation Across the Taiwan Strait
2022-08-09 14:29

Recently, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, in total disregard of the firm opposition and repeated solemn representations of the Chinese side, with the condonement and even arrangement of the U.S. government, brazenly took a military aircraft to visit China's Taiwan region. This reckless move seriously undermined China's sovereignty, seriously interfered in China's internal affairs, seriously violated the commitments made by the U.S. side, seriously jeopardized peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and sent a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence". We firmly oppose and strongly condemn this.

The causes of the tensions in the Taiwan Strait are very clear, so are the merits. It is the U.S. that stirred up the trouble; it is the U.S. that created the crisis; and it is also the U.S. that kept escalating tensions. The current situation is entirely caused by the U.S. side and they must bear full responsibility. The U.S. distorted facts at will, blame the innocent, and pressured China to exercise "restraint", this is a flagrant act of hegemony, coercion and bandit logic.

The executive, legislative and judicial branches are all part of the U.S. Government, and they must implement the one-China policy that the U.S. Government has committed to. Pelosi, as the second-ranked political figure in the line of succession to the U.S. presidency, represents the U.S. government in her every word and deed. Pelosi's trip to China’s Taiwan region is an out-and-out farce. It once again bankrupts the U.S. politics, diplomacy and credibility. It proves that the U.S. is the biggest destroyer of peace across the Taiwan Strait and the biggest troublemaker for regional stability. It attests to the confrontational and dangerous nature of the U.S. "Indo-Pacific strategy", and the U.S. hypocrisy, ignorance and double standards on international rules.

There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is the definition of the one-China principle, which is crystal clear. The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations. At present, more than 170 countries in the world have extended their strong support for China to uphold its sovereignty and the one-China principle through various means. This is the unified voice of justice of the international community and these countries overwhelmingly outnumber the U.S. and its few supporters.

Facing the U.S. side's blatant provocation to violate China's sovereignty, the position of the Chinese side is justified, reasonable and legal; our measures are firm, strong and measured; and our military exercises are open, transparent and professional. They are consistent with domestic and international laws, as well as international practices. They are aimed at sending a warning to the perpetrator and punishing the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. China is not only defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, but also upholding the international law and the basic norms governing international relations, particularly non-interference in countries' internal affairs, which is the most important international norm enshrined in the UN Charter. The U.S. attempt to use the "Taiwan card" to contain China will by no means hold back the historical trend of Taiwan's return to the motherland, nor can it stop the historical process toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The "Taiwan independence" forces' attempt to seek independence by soliciting U.S. support will only lead to the abyss of disasters.

Taiwan is China's Taiwan. No other country is entitled to act as a judge on the Taiwan question. We will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and efforts. That being said, we make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary means. No country, force or individual shall dream of obstructing China's reunification or misestimate the firm resolve, strong will and great capability of the Chinese Government and people to defend state sovereignty and territorial integrity and to achieve national reunification and rejuvenation.
